Bird Crochet

Image of Felted Tweety Birds

GAUGE:

14 sc + 16 rows = 4 in. [10 cm] before felting. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

NOTES:

  • Birds are worked in rounds beginning at the top of the Head. Do not join rounds. Place a marker for beginning of round and move up as each round is completed.
  • Wings and Tails are worked separately.
  • To change color, work last st of old color until 2 loops remain on hook, yarn over with new color, draw yarn through 2 loops on hook.

FINISHING
Using a pencil or knitting needle, stuff Head and Body. Sew opening closed. Position Tail about halfway down back of Body and sew in place. Position Wings on Body and sew in place. Sew eyes to either side of Head. From felt, cut a quarter circle with a 5/8 in. [1.5 cm] radius for beak. Roll beak into overlapping cone, sew cone seam, then sew beak to Head. Insert a chenille stem through Body for legs. Shape each end of stem into 3 toes and wrap end around ankle.
